Best Loved Hotels

MORE THAN A HOTEL

Most of us know what to expect when staying at a Best Loved hotel - character, comfort, a relaxing atmosphere, excellent food, impeccable service, a great night's sleep.

None of these are to be taken for granted, but sometimes it's something extra which makes a stay so memorable. This week we feature some of those unique and wonderful experiences which makes a Best Loved stay more than just a hotel.

Drink with the Dambusters

Petwood Hotel - photo

Petwood is famous as the home of the legendary RAF 617 "Dambusters" Squadron during the Second World War. The Squadron Bar is decorated with fascinating memorabilia and tributes to those who took part, including Guy Gibson, the squadron's heroic Wing Commander who had carried out over 170 raids by the age of 24, survived the Dambusters raid but was killed in action two years later. It's humbling and thrilling to drink in the spot where these young heroes planned their dangerous raid, including the invention of the famous "bouncing bomb."

CARNOUSTIE GOLF HOTEL, ANGUS

Championship Hospitality

Carnoustie Golf Hotel - photo

Carnousite overlooks what is by common agreement one of the top golf courses in the land. The Championship Course has hosted seven Opens, including those in 1999 and 2007, and will return in 2018. It's often considered one of the toughest, but also the fairest (and most scenic) of the great championship courses. The Burnside Links is often overshadowed by its famous neighbour, but offers its own challenges, including the infamous 17th hole, one of the hardest par fours in golf. The Buddon Links makes for an ideal introduction to the more demanding courses next door.
