Best Loved Hotels

Despite the very best efforts of the Luftwaffe, Victorian "improvers" and Twentieth Century town planners, there's hardly a corner of Great Britain without a notable landmark to bring history alive, and this includes many of our Best Loved hotels. From the footsteps of the legendary Dambusters to a Scottish turreted castle, from an Elizabethan manor to beautifully restored coaching inns, our selection of historic hotels and hotels near historic houses boasts something for everyone.

THE GEORGE IN RYE, EAST SUSSEX

The George in Rye - photo

This luxurious boutique hotel in the medieval coastal town of Rye was originally the town's main coaching inn and meeting house, made famous in the 18th century when the first London to Rye coach - The Diligence - made the journey in 16 hours. Three King Georges and the Duke of Wellington were entertained here and the Battle of Waterloo was celebrated with great fanfare. Many period features remain, including beams and a fireplace from an Elizabethan Gallery unexpectedly hidden behind the building's 18th century façade.

Town Hall Hotel and Apartments - photo

The Town Hall is an exuberant piece of Edwardian architecture built for the Bethnal Green council in 1910, symbolising the aspirations of the East End during the heyday of Empire. A 1930s extension added the magnificent Art Deco interiors which have made the building so attractive as a film location (think Atonement, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and TV's Poirot among many others).
