Top 5 Quintessentially British Activities

It's that time of year again where we get a few glimmers of sunshine and the whole of the UK gets very excited at the prospect of a Great British Summer. With that in mind, we have compiled a list of the top 5 "Quintessentially British" activities to indulge in over the next few months.

Seek Out The Best Fish & Chips

Seek Out The Best Fish & Chips

Come rain or shine, there is little better than a bag of piping hot fish and chips, with plenty of salt, and lashings of vinegar: A British classic, which is easy to find and won't break the bank! Most would argue that the best fish and chips can be found at the seaside, and luckily we have some fantastic coastal hotels to return to after the charm of a bracing walk on the beach has worn off.

Driftwood Beach House is a Delightful Beachside Boutique B&B Near Whitstable, just a stone's throw from Seasalter Beach. The Garrack Hotel, Cornwall is a Secluded St Ives Favourite, set in two acres of gardens with sweeping sea views. Finally, The Headland Hotel & Spa is a luxury hotel in Newquay, with rock-pooling, surfing and sunsets!

Free Museum Going

Queues In The Capital

In the UK we are incredibly fortunate to have the permanent collection of many of our most important museums open to the public free of charge. This is not at all the case in most places around the world, and popping into a museum for a relaxed visit (as opposed to a frantic get-your-moneys-worth-marathon) has become something of a quintessentially British phenomenon. Free museums include The National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, The British Museum, the Tates Britain and Modern, and all the great museums of South Kensington, just to name a few of the largest.

In an English Country Garden

In an English Country Garden (three cheers for those who sung that in their head!)

For an altogether more relaxing day out in Great Britain, why not spend the day on one of the many beautiful gardens. The Royal Horticultural Society is the world's leading gardening charity; they host flower shows, and can offer endless horticultural advice. They also have some wonderful gardens which are beautiful places to while away the hours (usually accompanied by a shop and tea room!).

The Talbot at Ripley is located just a mile and half from RHS Wisley in Surrey, making this 4-star coaching inn the closest place to stay near the garden. Wisley is the Royal Horticultural Society's flagship garden - the 240 acres are home to one of the world's largest plant collections. The garden is also a venue for sculpture exhibitions, Craft Fairs and a programme of diverse leisure learning courses in gardening, photography and art.

Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle

Here in Britain we are famous for our royal family, with several royal weddings having being international news several times over the past few years, many having taken place at Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and The Queen's favourite weekend home, located in the Royal County of Berkshire. Less crowded than a trip to Buckingham palace, Windsor is the place to be to spot a Royal!

Best Loved Hotels nearby include Fredrick's Hotel, Restaurant, & Spa, and Hurley House.

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea

Let's round off this list with a lovely cup of tea: Whether you prefer your beverage in a fine china teacup with an elongated pinky finger, or something more akin to a builder's brew - any tea is fine by us. Accompany it with a scone with jam and cream, and we're beaming from ear to ear (just don't ruin the mood by bringing up the cream or jam first debate!).

Almost all Best Loved Hotels come with fantastic restaurants, and many of these will serve a traditional Afternoon Tea. One in North Yorkshire, called the Black Swan even has it's own Tea Room, with over 20 variations of tea on the menu.
