Summer is such a delightful time for travelling around Britain and Ireland, not just for the fine, sunny days, but also for the incredible number of festivals and events on offer. Virtually every village or town has some interesting or wacky going on, in addition to such internationally recognised events as The Edinburgh Festival and Fringe Festival in August, The Proms in London (from next week until September), The Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate next week, Glyndebourne (ongoing till the end of Aug), and The delightful Galway Races (27 July - 2 Aug). And what a comforting feeling to know that you wherever you decide to go, a supremely character-filled and charming Best Loved hotel is waiting to receive you nearby. One fun summer arts event to pique my interest is the open-air theatre and garden picnic at Ballyvolane House in Country Cork on Saturday, 11 July. Ballyvolane is a stylish and comfortable country house which provides luxury accommodation and salmon fishing on the river Blackwater. This Saturday there will be a performance of Romeo & Juliet in the gardens, so relax with a pre-ordered picnic hamper and enjoy the show.
